English Personal Statement
I have a few strong passions in life; Indie music, Chelsea FC and literature. Since there are no university courses for the former two my decision concerning what to study at university is a simple one. ' The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones mad to live' was once said by Jack Kerouac in his work On The Road; the opportunity to experience living while studying amongst some of the finest literary minds in the country is overwhelmingly exciting for me. I
feel that for too long I have been confined to my suburban prison where my talent for English Literature is being wasted amongst the desolate, uninspiring confines of Mid Bedfordshire. Moreover, sidestepping the risk of sounding arrogant, I have been told I possess a flair for the subject and my grades would certainly suggest so.
The subjects I took for my AS levels were English Literature, History, Government and Politics and Communication Studies. For my A levels I decided to stop taking Communication Studies as I deemed it was best to focus on three subjects. Nevertheless, I believe that all three of these subjects have contributed more understanding to my knowledge of English Literature. History,
for example, has aided my ability to pick out key points within text and also contextualise any written work I may be asked to study. Government and Politics has taught me many political philosophies that are evident in literary works, for example in Year 12 we studied the play Translations which is littered with Nationalist and Imperialist viewpoints. Communications Studies revealed to me a whole new dictionary of ideologies I wasn't Pviously aware of. Another benefit of taking these subjects is that they are all examined by both coursework and timed exams. This means that through hours of practice and familiarisation I have refined my exam techniques.
Last year I was also fortunate enough to be selected to participate in a scheme organized by my school and the University of Bedford. It gave us the opportunity to get a glimpse of university life as I attended a number of lectures and achieved 15 points towards a potential degree through coursework I took part in. This was certainly an enlightening experience that will undoubtedly stand me in very good stead for the initial adjustment period that
accompanies the beginning of university life. This year I have been selected to take part in the Advance Extension Award. Not only is this a fantastic boost to my student repertoire but also the course itself should further aid my ability to realize my full potential in the subject.
When I achieve the required potential and finish my degree I have ambitions to utilise my skills as writer of some kind, Pferably an author or a poet. My literary heroes are Thomas Hardy, John Keats, The Smiths lyricist Morrissey and my personal favourite Oscar Wilde. It is my dream to one day have my name illuminated in history as a writer who has inspired people in the same way these and other writers have inspired me.
Lastly, to quote Wilde; 'consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative'. As a student I am anything but consistent when it comes to the studying of literature. Of course by this I don't mean I can be as equally brilliant as awful, the Dorian Gray within me will tell you I am never awful, what I am articulating is that I bring my own ideas to the subject and do not
simply regurgitate answers that are well documented already. That is not to say that I do not thoroughly research and acknowledge the criticism of the works I study but in my opinion English Literature is an innovative subject where interPtation and creativity should dominate. Studying English Literature at university offers me a chance to showcase my love for literature and flourish. The Smiths had a hit son

I have always been fascinated by the way writers can influence, and even manipulate readers emotions by their exPssion of thoughts, and by their ability to encourage the expansion of our imaginations and understanding. My favourite authors include Phillip Pullman, Caroline B. Cooney and also Ian McEwan, whose novels are inspiring because of their enviable lucidity and innovative character development. It is my love of literature that has stimulated me to write creatively for pleasure. I therefore want to study English further as a catalyst for my own writing and to extend my knowledge of a subject for which I have developed a passion.
My love of drama inspired me from a young age to take part in school productions by competing with over a hundred girls in auditions and successfully securing parts. I performed in the production of Othello at the Greenwich theatre two years ago, which was not only a privilege but also an exhilarating experience in communicating my interPtation to a large audience.
I am enthusiastic about all my studies and have therefore decided to continue with four A Levels. My subjects have enabled me to enhance and develop many skills. English Literature has furthered my knowledge of the stylistic devices employed by a variety of writers. In addition I have developed the skill of arguing cogently and effectively through my own writing. Biology and Psychology have primarily helped me to acquire the skill of interPting and learning complex factual information. Both subjects have developed my understanding of ethical and contemporary issues, and have thus complemented my study of English.
My study of History has allowed me to pursue my passion for investigating the past by retracing the steps that have led to our Psent circumstances. The subject offers me opportunities in abundance to formulate my own explanations, whilst emphasising the importance of open-mindedness in appraising the perspectives of other historians. I pursued my interest in history this summer by applying to the UCL/British Library summer school of Revolutions, and was selected, together with thirty-five other sixth formers across the UK. There I was given the inspiring opportunity to attend lectures given by recognised experts who were at the cutting edge of their field of study. Furthermore I was given the rare opportunity of handling primary material, which I found overwhelming given that many of the documents I studied were over four hundred years old.
I play an active part in my school and have consequently been involved in many extra-curricular activities. I was appointed a Pfect, and discharged my responsibilities with sensitivity. I am currently on the schools sixth form committee. My role here is developing my confidence, leadership skills and capacity to work co-operatively as part of a team. By participating in a debate as part of the University Access Programme I have become more articulate in exPssing my views. I have mentored a younger student, an experience that proved to be particularly rewarding when she acquired greater confidence in her reading. In addition I am a Millennium Volunteer and look forward to the prospect of teaching IT to a variety of people with physical or learning disabilities in my vacation period. I am a conscientious, sensitive and committed student and am confident that I have the qualities and skills to succeed at university. I look forward to the challenge of a demanding degree course, and to the opportunity to play a significant role in university life.

JK Rowling had her midnight cafes; Roald Dahl's garden shed has produced wheelbarrows of children's literature and the Bronte sisters roamed the vast expanse of the Yorkshire moors. I personally retreat to a caravan at the bottom of my garden where I find the creative stimulus required to write prizewinning poetry and biology essays alike
Whilst some people are terrified by, or worse, ambivalent towards modern poetry, I fail to remain unmoved after reading Jean 'Brita'Breeze' s "Moonwise" which epitomises the strength of emotion found within a short verse. The beautiful simplicity of the syntax found in such work inspires my creative writin; my poetry has won national competitions and been published in anthologies. Thus my daily diet of literature is a colourful juxtaposition of John Donne's solipsistic love poems, Tess Durbeyfield with her compassionate mentor Hardy and the infamous nobody Mr Pooter. A level English has not dictated but cultivated my critical opinions through analysis of such texts, and so I have been able to apPciate the subtly of fine writing, for example in Joyce's 'Dubliners'
The other subjects I am taking for A level support and complement my continual study of English. The methodology applied to research and eva luate critical arguments undertaken for A level history independent study are paralleled during my consultations with Bradly about Othello. A level biology demands the application of analysis with knowledge, and through my AS physics course I was selected to participate in the Engineering scheme, which enhances my ability to work in a team and to produce reports and Psentations. Such attributes were firmly in place after my work experience at the publicity department of Bloomsbury publishing, and in my duties as elected Head Girl
The majority of my extra-curricular activities demonstrate the aptitude I have for English; I write articles for the school magazine, take acting coaching and was the lead role in an all-female production of William Golding's "Lord of the Flies."I was awarded a sports scholarship for sixth form, play hockey for the school first XI and rePsent Somerset at the South West England hockey trials. To the amazement and horror of my friends I have started a running club at my college and the sport has given me great self-motivation and a sense of humour. My outside interests are huge, literally. After hockey and orchestra I regularly have to employ my skills as a manipulator to fit my cello and hockey goal keeping kit in the boot
Although some would argue the study for an English degree is not vocational I see the next few years of my life as the opportunity to become immersed in a subject I love. To develop my potential as a writer, I need to analyse and understand the work of those who inhabit library shelves. This course offers me the chance to explore the depths of Shakespeare, unravel the mysteries of Byron and grow in confidence as a literacy critic and person.
